There’s no doubt that you can get a feel for an area by exploring via car, train and even the impersonal motorcoach. But there is truly no better way to get a real perspective of an area and its people than by traversing it on foot.

Italy’s Amalfi Coast, arguably one of the most beautiful places on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of those places best explored by foot. Its undisputed beauty and the uniqueness of its natural landscape creates an almost contradictory combination of sea and mountain, fisherman and farmer. Man has adapted himself to the demands of life on the mountains, which plunge steeply into the turquoise-blue waters of the Tyrhennian Sea. Where the mountains meet the sea, hidden coves, cliffs, caverns and natural arches have formed, creating a seductive landscape, one that has long been heralded by poets and musicians, alike. In fact, the fabled Sirens in Homer’s epic poem “Odysseus” hail from this land.

Throughout the entire Costiera Amalfitana, a labyrinth of ancient footpaths (mule paths, actually) link town to town. According to UNESCO, these paths not only served as means of communication between the scattered villages and other settlements but also constituted an effective means of catching and channeling rainwater. They were also used regularly by smugglers after the decline of the Republic of Amalfi. Today, we can enjoy ambling along these paths, soaking in the natural beauty far away from the crowds of tourists in the villages below.

In the hills, the air is clean and verdant with the scent of myrtle, broom and wild rosemary. From the characteristic terraces etched into the hills, you can tense scents of the lemon groves, the vineyards, the broom, the bright colors of bougainvillea which, combined with the smell of salt air, creates a unique sensory experience

The wall of the church of Santa Maria in Positano has a bas-relief by an unknown artist depicting a fishing fox. This is the symbol of the Costiera Amalfitana and the unchanging relationship between sea and mountains, the two elements that shape this landscape.

Participants in a Buddhist meditation tour to India will enjoy a rare opportunity to attend a personal teaching by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama near his residence in Dharamsala. The program also includes a ten-day silent retreat at Tushita Meditation Centre in Mcleod Ganj.

The members of this tour group will meet in New Delhi, and will spend their first night in Majnu Ka Tilla, the city’s Tibetan quarter, as an introduction to this immersion into Tibetan Buddhist culture. They will have a choice of either traveling by aircraft or taking the more interesting 12-hour drive into the scenic Himalayan foothills to Mcleod Ganj, the home of the Dalai Lama in exile that is known as “Little Lhasa.”

The tour leaders are Lisa Tully, who is originally from Ireland, and Buga Tire, a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Offered by Body Mind Spirit Journeys, the tour dates are March 6 to 24, 2012.

“This spiritual experience is perfect for those who want to get away so they can go in and explore their true nature,” Lisa Tully said. “It is a chance to learn more about Tibetan Buddhism and harness some of its benefits for yourself and the people you share your life with by bringing home the souvenir of greater peace, love and compassion,” she added.

In addition to the Dalai Lama teaching and the meditation retreat, the program also includes a visit to the Tibetan Childrens’ Village, a charity that was established by the sister of the Dalai Lama for the purpose of caring for young people as well as preserving the traditional values of Tibet. A percentage of the profits of the tour are donated to help feed and educate Tibetan children and to support their families and culture both inside and outside of Tibet.

People who are interested in learning more about this Buddhist meditation retreat program are invited to please visit the website at bodymindspiritjourneys.com.

Day 1 – Tuesday, March 6

We greet you at Delhi airport then transfer to the Tibetan quarter of Delhi, Majnu Ka Tilla. You will then have the opportunity to explore the many alleyways and temples of this welcoming Tibetan maze. As you whiz your way across Delhi you will also get to experience the Indian way of life that is totally unique!

Day 2 – Wednesday, March 7
Early morning drive to McCleod Ganj, the scenic town that rests in the foothills of the Himalayas. This is the home of the Dalai Lama in exile and is also known as ‘Little Lhasa’ . We will reside in that general area for the duration of our tour. Believe us when we say you won’t want to leave! We travel up there by private transfer (approx 12 hours), then check into our hotel. If you would prefer you can also fly from Delhi to Dharamsala and meet us when we get there, it is a one hour flight.

Day 3 - Thursday, March 8

Attend teachings by His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama on the Jataka Tales in the morning at the main Tibetan temple. Group walk around the famous and incredibly scenic ‘kora’ that circles the Dalai Lama’s temple. It is considered particularly auspicious to do it when he is in town so we will gain great merit as we stroll! We then have a relaxed McLeod Ganj orientation as Lama Buga and Lama Kalden show us the town from their ‘monastic’ eyes. That evening we will attend our own private Green Tara puja held for us by our dear friends the tantric lamas from Gyumed Monastery. Green Tara is particularly helpful for any areas of your life you need swift action in so come with your intentions prepared!

Day 4 – Friday, March 9
Visit the fascinating Norbulingka centre, set up to keep Tibetan culture and values alive. Here you will have the opportunity to see artists at work as they paint the incredible Tibetan ‘Thangka’ paintings, each curve of which is guided according to the sacred texts. Late afternoon, in the true Tibetan spirit of kindness, we will take part in a relaxed English conversation class with local Tibetan refugees to do our bit for the local community.

Day 5 - Saturday, March 10

As many Tibetan children are sent to India by their parents so they can receive an authentic Tibetan education and up bringing, unfortunately they don’t have the means to come with them. The Tibetan Childrens’ Village was set up by the Dalai Lama’s sister to care for these children so their parents wishes can become a reality. We will take a stroll up the hillside to visit one of these heart warming schools and witness firsthand the strength of the Tibetan spirit despite all that has happened and continues to happen. Then keeping in line with this theme we will receive a private lecture from Ama Adhe, an incredible Tibetan elder woman who spent 27 years in a Chinese torture camp and still has an amazing smile that never fails to lift. To get the most from this experience we suggest you read her book “The Voice That Remembers” beforehand!

Day 6 - Sunday, March 11
Full day at leisure.

Day 7 - Monday, March 12

Tibetan astrology is an ancient tradition that dates back as far as the 2nd century. Proving more and more popular in the West, the Tibetan institute Men-Tsee-Khang offers astrological charts translated into English. We will visit this institute where you can order your chart astrological chart for the following year all included in the price of this tour! Just make sure you have your time of birth as well as the date and place and any specific questions you may have! In the afternoon we will take a walk up the hill to the wonderful Bhagsu waterfall where you will spot monks washing their robes in the crystal clear waters!

Day 8 - Tuesday, March 13
Check out of hotel and transfer by local taxi to the nearby peaceful Buddhist meditation centre up in the hills of McCleod Ganj. This place is quiet, surrounded by trees and hillside views with stupas scattered about the grounds for you to stumble across as you take a stroll.

Days 9 – 17 – Wednesday, March 14 through Wednesday, March 21

Introduction to Buddhism silent meditation retreat. Yes we did say silent, are you ready to go inside?

Day 18 – Thursday, March 22

Final day of retreat. Check out between 1 pm and 3 pm. Transfer in local taxi and check into hotel in McLeod Ganj town centre. Even the town centre of this special place has incredible buildings such as the temple seen here in this photo. That afternoon Lama Buga & Lama Kalden will take us to do a prayer flag puja. Writing names on prayer flags and hanging them in auspicious places is believed to blows all fears away.

Day 19 – Friday, March 23
Drive back down the mountain to Delhi by private transfer (Approx 12 hours). Overnight stay at the Tibetan quarter in Delhi.

Day 20 – Saturday, March 24
Exchange details with your new global family, then transfers to Delhi airport for onward travel.

Keep in mind: The planning of these tours depend on the teaching schedule of both His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama and the Tushita Meditation Centre. We plan as far ahead as all schedules allow and we do appreciate your patience on this.

The Bush compound (originally Point Vesuvius, then Walker’s Point), is the summer home of 41st President of the United States George H. W. Bush. Located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean in southern Maine, near the town of Kennebunkport, the property has been a family retreat for more than a century.

Bush Compound, Kennebunkport

The estate was purchased in the late 19th century by St. Louis banker George H. Walker, with a mansion being built in 1903. Later, the estate passed on to his daughter Dorothy Walker Bush and her husband Prescott Bush. The estate has since remained in the Bush family.

President George H. W. Bush spent much of his childhood at the Kennebunkport estate. He inherited the property after the death of his parents. As an adult, Bush, his wife Barbara, and their children George W., Jeb, Marvin, Neil, Dorothy, and Robin spent most summers at the estate. The estate has been a backdrop of family weddings, holidays, and receptions. While at the “Summer White House,” Bush hosted world leaders including Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev for informal and private meetings. As a young man, Bush relocated to Houston, Texas, and today the Bushes maintain a working residence in Tanglewood, where they spend most of their time.

Many people believe that Red’s Eats is the best lobster roll anywhere: Heaps of meat from at least one whole one-pound lobster is extracted in great hunks and piled into a toasted split-top bun that is accompanied by a cup of drawn butter or, if you wish, mayonnaise to garnish it. It is lobster-eater’s nirvana.

Boats – Boothbay Harbor

For over a century the Boothbay Harbor region has been a favorite destination of travelers longing to relax and enjoy the “rock bound coast of Maine” from land and sea. With its “snug as a booth” harbor, long peninsula, and numerous islands, the region is renowned for its natural beauty and boating pleasures. A bustling place, Boothbay Harbor retains all the charm and rich heritage of a maritime New England village – white clapboard homes, numerous specialty shops, galleries, boat yards and marinas dot the Harbor’s rocky shoreline.

Charming Boothbay Harbor

Boothbay Harbor boasts the largest fleet of excursion boats on the coast for viewing lighthouses, seals, islands, whales, puffins, and the spectacular foliage in fall. Deep-sea fishing cruises for cod, mackerel, tuna, haddock, and striped bass leave daily for full and half-day trips. Boothbay Harbor’s fine marinas and fishing facilities are well known to yachtsmen cruising the Maine coast. Seafood is the dining specialty – clams, scallops, shrimp and the king of them all LOBSTER.

Camden typifies Maine’s coast

A quintessential coastal Maine town at the foot of wooded Camden Hills, the affluent village of Camden sits on a picturesque harbor that no Hollywood movie set could improve on. It has been attracting the gentry of the Eastern Seaboard for more than a century. The mansions of the moneyed set still dominate the town’s…

Sunrise, Mount Cadillac, Acadia National Park

At 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and is the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. It is one of over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island, Maine, that were pushed up by earth’s tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years ago. Were it not for the once huge glaciers that sheared off their tops, they would be even higher than what we see today. I thought that my hands were frozen. It was cold. Bring gloves.

First Sunrise in America, Mount Cadillac, Acadia National Park

Cadillac Mountain is largely composed of pink granite with forests of spruce and pitch pine. Views of Acadia National Park from the top of the mountain are spectacular. And, when combined with tiny subalpine plants (such as cinquefoil), squat, gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and various sized boulders, it is unsurpassed. Bar Harbor, Maine, the most well known town on Mount Desert Island, is to the northeast. The Cranberry Islands are to the southwest. During certain times of the year, visitors to the summit are the first to see the rising sun in the United States.

The blueberry muffins have garnered a gold medal from the Culinary Hall of Fame, Gourmet magazine has requested the recipe for the world-famous walnut pie, and Saveur magazine named the whoopie pie one of the 100 top food finds of the year in 1999. For 80 years, Moody’s Diner has been a national icon, serving great food to more than a million satisfied customers.

Those who have been to Moody’s Diner know that Moody’s is not a ‘quaint-on-purpose’ tourist attraction. It is a diner on US Route 1 in Waldoboro, Maine, plain and simple. It has survived, prospered and grown these 80 years because of good food, reasonable prices and quick, pleasant service. There are people who eat at Moody’s every day, and those who come in every time they travel to Maine. All are made welcome. Locals aren’t expected to go elsewhere during tourist season and tourists aren’t gouged for their vacation cash – it’s never going to be that kind of place.

Nubble Lighthouse
York, Maine. The Nubble Lighthouse is located on a peninsula between Short and Long Sands Beachs in York Maine. This beautiful landmark is an active light and is located on a small rocky island at the end of the point. This is one of the most scenic and photographed lighthouses in the world. The Nubble is about a half hour south of Kennebunkport.

Tour Buses flock to Nubbel Lighthouse and makes for a wonderful day trip from Kennebunkport

A week is not a long time to visit any destination. However, in today’s fast paced world many times we find ourselves traveling on shorter sojourns. One can spend a month in Maine, or a week. Short sojourns also can be rewarding. The fact that one cannot see everything actually make a trip easier. Yes, it is possible to travel for 4 – 7 days and to come back with a lifetime of memories.

A “taste of Maine” is indeed very sweet.

Mandarin is a Travellers’ Choice® 2012 Winner on tripadvisor!

Over the past couple of years, we have been delighted by the feedback many of you have posted on tripadvisor, and we have been proud to occupy the top-rated spot amongst the small hotels and B&Bs category in the Fethiye area for some time. To add to our accolades, we have now been named as amongst the best small hotels in all of Turkey in tripadvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice® Awards. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have rated us online, and for all the kind words in your reviews – they really make it all worthwhile for our small team here at Mandarin.

An unspoilt setting, luxurious surroundings and a warm, personal welcome…

Opened in the summer of 2007, Mandarin is a delightful boutique hotel situated in an unspoilt natural setting close to south-west Turkey’s magnificent Turquoise Coast.

Perfect for nature lovers who also value a touch of luxury and a high level of personal service, Mandarin has been designed as a stylish and supremely comfortable hideaway, which nevertheless boasts a pleasantly informal atmosphere without any hint of stuffiness or pretension.

Mandarin comprises just eight guestrooms and thus offers a very intimate ambience, making it the perfect venue for a small group to rent for a special celebration, club event or even a business meeting. However, the hotel is equally suited to romantic couples and guests wishing to stay in unspoilt surroundings, relax in unperturbed peace and perhaps indulge in a few nature-based activities. Please note that, to maintain its air of tranquillity, Mandarin operates a no-children policy (with the exception of group bookings renting the hotel in its entirety).

…introducing one of Turkey’s most exclusive retreats.

Accomodations

Mandarin’s deluxe guestrooms and suites are extraordinarily spacious, and equipped to the highest standards. Bespoke, hand-carved wood furnishings lend the interiors a distinct sense of traditional charm, whilst up-to-the-minute facilities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, CD/DVD players, fridges, a hospitality tray complete with a kettle and a selection of herbal infusions, tea and coffee.

Each deluxe room benefits from a large balcony or terrace with reclining chairs allowing you to relax and absorb the tranquillity, with particularly magnificent sea views from the upper floor rooms. The same views can be enjoyed through panoramic windows from the jacuzzis inside each room, whilst the particularly well-appointed en-suite bathrooms are provided with hairdryers and a selection of quality toiletries.

The deluxe and junior suites are located in the original Villa Mandarin and have twin beds, whilst the six deluxe rooms in the stylish new building all have super-kingsize four-poster double beds.

Location

Situated just south of the stunning Butterfly Valley, the sleepy hamlet of Faralya is an idyllic retreat, where life continues at a relaxed pace.

And yet this rural haven lies just 9km from the popular seaside resort of Oludeniz, whose famous lagoon beach is one of Turkey’s most photographed images and just 21km from the bustling harbour and market town of Fethiye. The international airport at Dalaman is 80km away and is served by regular flights from all major UK and European airports, as well as offering several daily links with Istanbul for those making connections from further afield.

In spite of Mandarin’s rural setting, a hire car is not strictly necessary, for there is a local taxi and the dolmus service (3 – 9 times per day depending on the season), which serves both Oludeniz and Fethiye, can be flagged down. Those hiring a car or using local taxis can reach the sandy beach of Kidrak in around 10 minutes, whilst Kabak beach is a similar distance in a four-wheel drive vehicle (or a 5-minute drive plus 15 minute walk). Confident swimmers can bathe off the rocks at Aktas, around 20-30 minutes walk away.

Bula Everyone!

Music and art allows us to learn about other cultures through its people’s observations, beliefs and self- expression. By exploring the world of music and art you also discover mankind’s fascination with portraying life through various medias as diverse as life’s experience itself. Only through understanding how people believe in the place where they live can we begin to understand their culture and that puzzle piece of the world as a whole.Come join Mark Cantor, Mark Cantor (click and hear what Ken burns has to say about Mark cantor), well known jazz archivist in the United States famous for his presentations at the Playboy Jazz Festival and in San Francisco and other jazz events nationwide, on a music and art extravaganza to the 10th annual JAZZMANDU! Travels with Teri has arranged a 10 day escorted tour to the only jazz party in the Himalayas! Mr. Cantor will be giving post commentaries on all jazz performances and workshops attended. Negotiations are also in progress for Mr. Cantor to give a workshop on American Jazz. Space will be limited for the small group tour on a first come first serve basis

October 31 – Welcome to Kathmandu
Arrive in Kathmandu, where you are met and transferred to your lovely accommodations. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner with traditional Nepali cuisine.

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet
Meals: JAZZMANDU Orientation, Dinner & Dance Performance

November 1 – Explore Kathmandu & Launch the 10th JAZZMANDU!
Today’s tour of Kathmandu includes the Temple of the Living Goddess, Durbar Square, the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the 2,000-year-old Swayambunath Temple, and the colorful lanes and alleyways of the local market place. This afternoon travel to the southwestern end of the Kathmandu Valley to visit In the ancient city of Patan, the “City of Grace and Fine Arts,” famous for its exquisite temples and talented artists. See the historical Newari Temple Complex and visit a metal workers shop making religious statues for both Hindus and Buddhists. Evening launch party for JAZZMANDU!

Kathmandu is located at an elevation of 4,600 feet in a bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal surrounded by four major hills: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri. Spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas from can be seen from the town as well as a magnificent view of Mt. Everest. The city’s rich history is nearly 2000 years old and its religious affiliations are predominantly Hindu followed by Buddhism. The indigenous people of the valley, the Newars, are known for their superb metal working and stone and wood carving. Swayambunath or “Monkey Temple” named so for the many “sacred” monkeys living around the temple occupies a central position in the valley and is visited by both Hindus and Buddhists. It is the second most sacred next to Boudhanath for Tibetan Buddhists.

Patan is a major city near Kathmandu and is known for its traditional handicrafts, and cottage industries. Patan or “Lalitpur” as it once called has produced the highest number of renowned artists and finest craftsmen ever recorded in the history of Nepali art. Even in the face of rapid urbanization and many social and political upheavals, Patan has maintained a culture of art and craft work and remains is less urbanized than Kathmandu. There are wonderful temples to visit, arts to learn about and now, JAZZMANDU!

JAZZMANDU 2012 is the 10th anniversary of the only jazz festival held in the Himalayas –Kathmandu, Nepal. The idea behind the founders of JAZZMANDU, Chhedup Bomzan of The Jazz Upstairs Bar, and Navin Chettri, drummer and vocalist of Cadenza, was to bring quality jazz to Nepal, transcend cultural boundaries, and spread the message of peace and compassion through music. In a country such as Nepal which has been so impacted by its main industry tourism and drastic political transition this is quite a strong statement. Jazz musicians and aficionados come from all over the world to unite for 8 days and learn not only about jazz but about Nepal and one another.

The JAZZMANDU Festival also organizes free educational music programs, workshops and clinics for school students around Kathmandu. Students are invited from different schools to experience live and interactive performances of jazz performed by some of the world’s top musicians. This is a great opportunity for Nepali students to see artists from different parts of the world—an opportunity most of them would otherwise never experience. With the aim of giving a platform for up and coming musicians, there is also a music competition known as “Jazz for the Next Generation”. This music competition encourages and acknowledges the efforts and skills of budding Nepali musicians.

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet
Meals: Breakfast

November 2 – Discover the Valley & Evening Jazz Performances
After breakfast travel to the outskirts of Kathmandu to see The Great Stupa of Boudhanath, one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal and one of the world’s largest stupas. Visit a thanka painter to see how Tibetans preserve their ancient art of religious iconography. The tour continues on to the PashupatinathTemple, Hindu’s holiest shrine on the banks of the Bagmati River. Here you will see real modern day sadhus who have renounced the world to live the life of an ascetic. The rest of the afternoon and evening will be free to attend performances of the 10th annual JAZZMANDU Festival.

The ancient Buddhist stupa of Boudhanath dominates the skyline and is one of the largest in the world. The influx of large populations of Tibetan refugees from Tibet since the 1950’s has seen the construction of over 50 Tibetan monasteries and centers in and around Boudhanath. Tibetans in exile have created a strong thriving and preserved Tibetan culture. Since 1979 Boudhanath has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Stupa is located on the ancient trade route from Tibet which enters the Kathmandu Valley through the village of Sankhu in the northeast corner, passes by Boudnath Stupa to the ancient and smaller stupa of Cā-bahī (often called ‘Little Boudnath’) and then turns directly south, heading over the Bagmati river to Patan. Tibetan merchants have rested and offered prayers here for many centuries. The Stupa is said to entomb the remains of Kassapa Buddha.

Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu and dates back to 400 A.D. and was where the deity, Pashupati, gained great fame as the Lord of the Animals. The richly-ornamented pagoda houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple. There are many legends describing as to how the temple of Lord Pashupatinath came to existence here. One of the best known is the Cow Legend which says that Lord Shiva once took the form of an antelope and roamed unknown in the forest on Bagmati river’s east bank. The gods later caught up with him, and grabbing him by the horn, forced him to resume his divine form. The broken horn was worshipped as a linga but overtime it was buried and lost. Centuries later an astonished herdsmen found one of his cows showering the earth with milk. Digging deep at the site, he discovered the divine linga of Pashupatinath.

Bhaktapur or the “City of Devotees” is the home of traditional art and architecture, historical monuments and craft works, magnificent windows, pottery and weaving industries, excellent temples, beautiful ponds, rich local customs, culture and religious festivals. Bhaktapur remains untouched by modernization as well as a preserved ancient city. This magnificent Palace of Fifty-Five Windows was built during the in 1427 A.D. and remodeled in the seventeenth century. Among the brick walls, with their gracious setting and sculptural design, is a balcony of fifty-five windows which is considered to be a unique masterpiece of woodcarving. TheGolden Gate is the entrance to the Palace.

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet
Meals: Breakfast

November 4 – Early Morning drive to Namo Buddha & Afternoon/Evening Performances
Visit the holy site of Namo Buddha (a 45 minute drive from Kathmandu) which has drawn pilgrims to this sacred spot for centuries. According to legend, Lord Buddha is believed to have sacrificed his own flesh to feed a starving tigress and her cubs. A carved stone slab depicts this Buddhist tale of selfless compassion and sacrifice. Explore the surrounding area before returning for performances of JAZZMANDU.

Namo Buddha is the third of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the valley after Boudhanath and Swayambunath. Located high on a hill its environment is very clean with no pollution, its air fresh. Namo Buddha is known also for meditation practice and retreats. Beautiful views of snow-covered Himalayan ranges are not to be missed!

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet

November 5 – Himalayan Healers & More Jazz Performances
Discover Himalayan Healers and learn about the wonderful work that Rob, the owner, is doing. Himalayan Healers is a Healing Arts School and collection of Spa Boutiques, with branches in both Nepal and in the United States. It is the only project in the world that trains “Untouchables” in the Healing Arts. Receive a massage. Early evening performances at JAZZMANDU.

Himalayan Healers is a project from the heart of Rob Buckley. Because of Rob’s dedication people who may have not had a chance at an honest living are now working with an education and their dignity.

“The idea to create the Himalayan Healers project crossed Rob Buckley’s mind while he was attending massage school. Near graduation, while sitting in a circle at class, each student was taking turns sharing their hopes for their future in massage. The inspiration to open the first professional massage school in Nepal – and to have it focus primarily upon returning the power of touch to “Untouchables” – came as a surprise to everyone, including Rob. Luckily, he followed his heart, began trading massages for frequent flier miles, gave away most of his “stuff”, and flew out to Nepal to start building the project from the ground up. Rob has worked on a voluntary basis for the past seven years, taking out personal loans, turning down employment opportunities in the States, and generating support from family and friends, to build this project.”

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet
Meals: Breakfast

November 6 – Lotus Gallery/Indigo Gallery & JazzmanduThis morning you visit the Lotus Gallery (Thamel) which promotes modern day Himalayan art and also visit the Indigo Gallery, also known for its Newari paintings. Attend a mid-afternoon Jazz workshops, time permitting before an early evening drive to Nagarkot.

Their goals are in aiding Tibetan artists and developing new avenues to expose their art, exclusively represent Nepali master artists such as Lama Tenzing of Dolpo and Prem Lama of Kathmandu and continually work on collaborative projects to generate financial aid for underprivileged villages in Nepal. They donate warm clothing and services for those who are disadvantaged. Jim Aplington gives art presentations during his time staying in the United States.

Indigo Gallery was founded twenty three years ago to foster the traditional arts of Nepal, particularly the Newar school of painting as seen in the ancient scrolls known in Newari as “paubha”. An expansion into an old Rana/Newar private home has enabled the gallery to expand into another art media, the field of sculpture. The gallery director, James Giambrone, has 25 years of experience working with the traditional bronze casters of Patan. The gallery has hosted exhibitions of modern painting, sculpture, photos and textiles and also hosts a series of evening slide shows and lectures on diverse subjects pertaining to the art and culture of the Himalayan region.

Nagarkot is surrounded by lush forested hills of pine trees and agricultural villages. It is a rustic resort area high on a hilltop on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu valley which offers great views of the Himalayas especially of the Langtang range. Nagarkot is known for its sunsets and spectacular sunrises over the entire valley. There are short trails around the town and longer hikes for those adventurers. An overnight here offers a nice break from the vibrant city.

Copyright 2012 David/Anna Smith

Our first overnight stay of our Nile felucca adventure last year was on an isolated Nile River bank near Aswan, Egypt. Earlier, in the heat of day, we jumped into the surprisingly cold and refreshing Nile and lazed under the protecting woven canopy as our Nubian captain and crew tacked against strong north winds. The slow movement down river allowed glimpses of life along the Nile river as we criss crossed this famous and historic river. With dusk emerging, the strong winds quickly abated so we tied up to a fallen tree on the riverbank, ate a pleasant Egyptian dinner of rice, beans and bbq’d chicken while watching occasional donkeys and camels being led by locals stroll by and bird wildlife cross our view.

Ehab Ghareb, our wonderful OntheGo tour guide, casually announced he could lead us to a Nubian village – lets go! No time to change out of our swimsuits, we donned our tops and sandals and hiked up the muddy riverbank to a dirt road atop the river dyke. We are glad we grabbed our cameras!

The Nubians with very dark skin are an ethnic group originally from northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Ancient Nubians were famous for their vast wealth arising from trade between cenral Africa and the lower Nile civilizations, their great military, their advanced civilization, and their century-long rule over the Pharoahs of the united upper and lower Egyptian kingdoms. The creation of the Aswan dams in the early 20th century and 1960’s forced Numbians to evacuate to villages and cities across Eypypt. We are going to visit one of those tiny villages.

A first camera experience

An old proud woman wearing an indigo shawl and robe brought her daughter and grandchildren into the courtyard and we exchanged greetings in both Arabic and English while snapping away. One little girl was offered to hold a huge SLR camera and within a few seconds guidance of how to take a picture she was snapping away and admiring her achievements on the camera’s LCD with a twinkle in her eye. David put his own camera on continuous mode and captured this happy child experincing a digital camera for the first time.

“It is moments like this that make travel and photography together such a satisfying way to view and experience the world” notes David, with a Cheshire cat smile.

David, reminiscing Steve McCurry’s famous National Geographic Afghan girl, the dimming light caught the old woman’s eye to create a friendly glint and charming smile while he caught several shots. Everyone sat on porches facing the courtyard to bask in the last sunrays and men and women willingly posed and smiled while the warming yellow light faded to blue as evening quickly turned to darkness in this primitive and enchanting village.

On the return to our felucca, our excellent travel and photo adventure continued as Anna was offered a donkey ride by a young boy, all captured in a video clip that will guarantee to make you smile. Not wanting this day to end, we sat on the riverbank with more villagers and were granted more stories of everyday life along with genuine friendship and questions of how we were enjoying Egypt. We answered an overwhelming yes! As we waved goodbye, we marveled at our fortune to be so warmly welcomed in local ethnic communities all over the world. Egyptians and in particular, Nubians are some of the warmest people you can meet.Visit our Interface Images photo gallery of our adventures in a Nubian village here.

After a 10 minute walk, with local villagers meeting and greeting us with shy warm smiles, we entered a collection of small houses surrounding a muddy courtyard. This was in fact the home of “Fuzzy” one of the felucca crewmen and we were invited into their homes to take photos and see how they lived. Three generations of the same family lived in the 2 or 3 homes around the courtyard and they willingly posed for us while teaching a few Arabic phrases and offering tea. The light from the setting sun was magical and the local Nubians so warm and friendly that we had no time for tea or shisha water pipes, this was a lifetime photo opportunity and we took it.
